Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) - Digital public infrastructure (DPI) pertains to blocks or platforms like payment infrastructure, data exchange solutions and digital identification that assist nations in providing citizens with basic services, giving citizens more control over their lives, and enhancing quality of life by facilitating digital inclusion.

Current Challenges to DPI

• A troubling trend involves the weaponization of technology and data, also known as "Digital Colonisation", which results in a loss of privacy, agency, and sovereignty.

• Therefore, the key to avoiding such difficulties is to think carefully about how to construct good DPI

Important DPI Elements in India

• Digital Identity - The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) created Aadhaar, a distinctive identification system that assigns each Indian citizen an exclusive identification number on the basis of their biometric information. Aadhaar can be used as a digital ID proof to access government services, among other things.

• UPI (Unified Payment Interface) - Anyone with a bank account can use a mobile device to make real-time digital payments. A non-profit organization, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is in charge of its management and it runs the UPI payments system on its central server.

• DigiYatra and DigiLocker - Based on a facial recognition system (FRS), DigiYatra is a Biometric Enabled Seamless Travel (BEST) platform that guarantees effortless passenger identification at crucial checkpoints like security screening, boarding gate clearance and airport entry.

• With nearly 15 million members and a cost of $369 per year for four members of a family, the United States CLEAR programme (a speedier airport security/airport identity verification process) is currently operational at 51 airports.

• Cybersecurity - To respond to cybersecurity incidents and guarantee the safety of digital infrastructure within the country, the government setup the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In).

• Overall, the DPI ecosystem in India has experienced impressive growth and development over the past ten years, and there are many opportunities for additional growth and development in the years to come.

Functions of DPI - To put it simply, it mediates the flow of information, people and money through the following.

• The movement of people through a digital ID system.

• The movement of money through a real-time, quick payment system.

• The flow of personal data through a consent-based data-sharing system in order to realise the advantages of DPIs.
