The annual report, ‘Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics 2022’ was released recently by the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying.
• It provides a brief overview of the sector in terms of relevant livestock statistics.
• It is the basic data source on production projection of four Major Livestock Products (MLPs) such as egg, wool, milk and meat for the financial year 2021-22.
• The data can be helpful while making policies and long-term planning while it can also be useful for academicians and researchers worldwide.
Major Highlights
• The total GVA and the contribution of livestock within the agriculture sector in 2021-21 at constant prices was 4.9% and 30.13% respectively.
• During the period 2020-21 and 2014-15, the sector’s value addition increased at a compound yearly rate of 7.93%.
Egg Production
• The total production of egg within the country in 2021-22 was 129.60 billion and when compared to the last year, the figure grew by 6.19%.
• The five leading states which produce eggs are Karnataka (6.38%), West Bengal (8.84%), Telangana (12.86%), Tamil Nadu (16.08%) and Andhra Pradesh (20.41%).
• The per-capita egg availability in 2021-22 was 95 units a year and it grew by 5 units as compared to the previous year.
Wool Production
• During 2021-22, the total production of wool within the country was 33.13 thousand tonnes which is less by about 10.30% when examined with the previous year.
• The top five states of wool production are Himachal Pradesh (4.33%), Maharashtra (4.78%), Gujarat (6.12%), Jammu and Kashmir (23.19%) and Rajasthan (45.91%).
Milk Production
• During 2021-22, the total production of milk in India was 221.06 million tonnes and the annual growth rate compared to the previous year was 5.29%
• The top five states in milk production are Andhra Pradesh (6.97%), Gujarat (7.56%), Madhya Pradesh (8.06%), Uttar Pradesh (14.93%) and Rajasthan (15.05%).
• In 2021-22, the per capita milk consumption was 444 grams/day and it is an increase of 17 grams/day when compared to the previous year.
Meat Production
• During 2021-22, the total meat production was 9.29 million tonnes with a yearly growth rate of 5.62%.
• The top five meat states for meat production are Telangana (10.82%), Andhra Pradesh (11.04%), West Bengal (11.63%), Uttar Pradesh (12.14%) and Maharashtra (12.25%).
• The per-capita meat availability grew by 0.30 kg/year compared to the previous year.
