Microeconomics NMPI, or, the National Multidimensional Poverty Index is a non-monetary approach of the measurement of poverty as developed and designed by the NITI Aayog in India. It is based on the method of GMPI (Global Multidimensional Poverty Index) prepared by UNDP or, the United Nations Development Programme and OPHI or, the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative. The NITI Aayog’s NMPI uses 12 indicators while the GMPI uses 10 indicators which are grouped into three categories of living standard, health and education. The weights, indicators and dimensions of the National MPI are elucidated in the following figure.
Micro economic meaning The estimation of poverty according to the above can be perceived with a very simple example. If a family in this country is deprived of at least 33% of the weighted average of the aforementioned indicators, the family is classified as poor.
