Recently, the foundation stone of a Frozen Semen station was laid by the Ministry of Fisheries and Animal Husbandry at Ranbir bagh, Jammu and Kashmir (J&K).

Some Facts about the Station

• A sanctioned sum of Rs. 2163.57 lakhs from the Rashtriya Gokul Mission (RGM) will go towards the development of this semen station.

• It will help J&K to become self-reliant in producing germ-free, disease-free and high quality plasm that can be used for Artificial Insemination (AI).

• Productivity of dairy cattle can be escalated significantly with increased coverage of AI within J&K.

• It will further enhance Frozen Semen Bull Station, Ranbir Bagh so that the yearly production can be increased to more than 10 Lakh Frozen Semen Straws (FSSs)

Rashtriya Gokul Mission (RGM) - Started in December 2014, RGM is a targeted project of National Programme for Dairy Development and Bovine Breeding. Some other facts pertaining to it are:

• RGM aims to develop and conserve local breeds in a scientific and planned manner.

• It has been implemented by the Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries under the Ministry of Agriculture with the help of state implementing departments like the Livestock Advancement Boards, etc.

Objectives

• To conduct ‘breed improvement schemes’ for local breeds of cattle to increase their numbers and develop their genetic makeup.

• Improve milk production and overall productivity.

Provisions

• Setting up of ‘Gokul Gram’, i.e., integrated local cattle centres.

• Setting up of ‘Gopalan Sangh’ or breeder’s societies.

• Provide high-genetic, disease-free merit bulls to aid natural service.

• Incentivising those farmers who have elite cattle of local breeds.

• Conducting training programmes for non-technical and technical work force within the local cattle development institute/institutions.

• Bolstering bull mother farms so that high genetic local breeds can be conserved effectively.

• Helping all institutes/institutions which work towards the storage of high quality germplasm.

Other Initiatives by RGM

• Towards the conservation and development of local breeds in a scientific manner, the National Kamdhenu Breeding Centre (NKBC) was established as a centre of excellence.

• Establishing an e-market portal, i.e., ’E-Pashu Haat – Nakul Prajnan Bazaar’ to connect farmers and breeders in a meaningful manner.

• Conducts a cattle wellness programme called ‘Pashu Sanjivani’ along with an option of cattle health cards.

• Setting up of National Bovine Genomic Centre for Indigenous Breeds( NBGC-IB).
