The government has been funding a variety of special projects aimed at creating additional job opportunities or, employment to augment those created by the economy in its usual course. Some of the most notable programmes are listed below:
1. Rural Poor Employment Programmes - The major ongoing rural poor employment programmes are the Swarnajayanti Gramme Swarozgar Yojana (SGSY), a self-employment programme involving the merger of the former IRDP and various component programmes, and the Sampoorna Grameen Rozgar Yojana (SGRY), a wage employment programme involving the integration of the Jawahar Gramme Samriddhi Yojana (JGSY) and Employment Assurance Scheme (EAS). The National Food For Work Programme (NFFWP), the Rural Employment Generation Programme (REGP), and the MGNREGS or, the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme are examples of such initiatives.
2. Employment projects for the Urban Poor - In addition to the efforts in rural regions, there have been particular employment projects for the urban poor that focus on both wage work and self-employment. This would enable them to acquire collective power in addressing poverty challenges and participating in the successful execution of urban poverty reduction activities.
3. Educated youth self-employment - In addition to the aforementioned initiatives, a plan was developed to give job options for an increasing number of educated adolescents who are not from low-income households but are having difficulty obtaining productive work.
4. Village and Khadi Industries - Support for Khadi and a variety of traditional village industries such as beekeeping, soap, leather products, agarbatti, dalia, masala, pickle, ghari oil and so on is an important component of the government's strategy to promote rural employment.
5. Additional Programmes - Other programmes of the centre and states aimed primarily at generating self-employment among special sectors of the labour force include:
i) the National Minorities Finance and Development Corporation
ii) the National Backward Classes Finance and Development Corporation
iii) the National SC/ST Finance and Development Corporation
iv) the National Handicapped Finance and Development Corporation
v) Support for Training and Employment Programme

vii) National Credit Fund for Women
